Are you in shape for success? It’s time to do a tune-up and look under the hood

“Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.” – David Hume’s Essays, Moral and Political, 1742

Just like beauty, success is in the eyes of the beholder, or is based on your perception. Encarta defines perception as the process of using the senses to acquire information about the surrounding environment or situation.

As individuals, we are unique and have been conditioned over time to respond based on our perceptions.  Our minds act as filters and unconsciously determine the pathways of response before we consciously react.  With recent advances in neuroscience, researchers now know that our intuition (our gut feeling) is really our adaptive unconscious and our emotions drive the majority of our actions and how we respond to daily experiences. So, what does this all mean?  How does it relate to success?

When you are in the driver’s seat, you have a road map, navigate with a personal strategic plan, have a clear vision and clearly understand how you can leverage your natural strengths and talents to support you to thrive or be successful and happy.  Ask yourself, when you take a road trip, what do you use to help you navigate:  GPS, an online road map, or a travel directory from AAA?  Why do you take more time and planning to design your travel experiences but fall short with designing a road map for your career and your life?

As you all know, old paradigms of success are being tested.  The world is not the same as it once was.  Recent technological and medical advances have prolonged life and provided tools for the world to spin faster, but how many of us are positioned for success in this new world?  We need to take a deep breath and step back for a moment to clearly see who’s driving whom these days.  Are you just responding the way you always have, or on autopilot, or do you have a road map that fits the real you?  Have you checked under the hood lately and examined what your brain is doing to shift you into patterns of success?

I am starting this blog to raise awareness about what is really going on and provide you with ways and tools to reframe your current situation and shift back into drive, instead of neutral or reverse with your work, relationships, and your life.  I will be using the latest research from the fields of neuroscience and psychology, with reference to best business practices, as well as my own experience and research over the past 25 years working with clients to help illustrate how to reframe your current reality to match your expectations and get you in shape for success.
